POLYPLASTICS UNVEILS POLYPHENYLENE SULFIDE USE IN LASER-WELDED APPLICATIONS



KUALA LUMPUR, July 12 (Bernama) -- Leading global supplier of engineering thermoplastics Polyplastics Co Ltd has found successful use of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) in laser-welded applications such as automotive parts.


According to a statement, the company is offering DURAFIDE (R) PPS 1130A1 which delivers greater transmittance and toughness, and facilitates laser welding in a range of applications.


Laser welding joins two or more items together -- there are advantages to this -- but using PPS has been difficult due to its low laser transmittance and related mass production issues such as a narrow processing window.


Polyplastics' linear-type DURAFIDE (R) PPS, characterised by its white natural colour versus the reddish-brown natural colour of competitive crosslink-type PPS materials, offers superior laser transmissibility (light transmissibility in the infrared region) and makes laser welding possible.


DURAFIDE (R) PPS 1130A1 offers an approximate six per cent improvement in laser transmittance, resulting in a wider processing window for a broad range of welding conditions.


The material also offers a 28 per cent improvement in toughness versus standard grades. This exceptional toughness is important for initial strength and durability.


DURAFIDE (R) PPS 1130A1 also offers strong dimensional stability, low warpage and chemical resistance.


Polyplastics is currently undertaking a development project to better laser transmittance of PPS and further widen the processing window.
