KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 (Bernama) -- The NanoMalaysia Berhad, Malaysia’s leading agency in nanotechnology and advanced solutions commercialisation and a company limited by guarantee (CLBG) under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), has announced its commitment to adopting the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as guiding principles in its corporate strategy, culture and day-to-day operations.

Many of NanoMalaysia Berhad’s key activities and projects have already aligned with the SDGs, including aquaponics for food security, Graphene cooling liquids for energy and environmental technologies, energy storage development and improvement and security of sustainable materials through the creation of biomass-based advanced materials under the Biomass Innovation for Circular Economy Programme (BICEP) with intellectual properties (IP) created from these projects.

NanoMalaysia Chief Executive Officer Dr Rezal Khairi Ahmad said: "As a business entity that energises industries and the national economy, we aim to contribute to all 17 goals by realigning our existing sustainability strategies to meet SDGs and green corporate goals. We will take a focused, strategic and robust approach to address local and global issues, which will help attract future investments and funding. We are already operating on a quadruple helix-based Venture Builder model to support the government, research institutes, industry, and communities to deliver our mandate towards commercialising and developing sector and people-centric nanotechnology solutions, local EV and hydrogen technology for the nation’s sustainable economic growth”.

NanoMalaysia Berhad has laid a clearly defined 5-step roadmap with a 2030 deadline to achieve its goals. Firstly, the organisation will seek to understand the SDGs by familiarising itself with the objectives, targets, and indicators. The second step is to define priorities, identifying the SDGs that closely align with NanoMalaysia Berhad’s values and activities. Once priorities are established, specific and measurable goals will be set in the third step to drive meaningful progress. Integration is the focus of the fourth step, where sustainability considerations are incorporated into strategies, operations, and decision-making processes. Lastly, reporting and communicating progress is crucial as it is imperative that the company transparently shares its SDG-related efforts, achievements, and challenges, fostering accountability and inspiring others.

The organisation will apply the Environment, Societal and Governance (ESG) framework to achieve the aforementioned goals. ESGs are a rating system commonly employed to evaluate an organisation's adherence to sustainability and ethical principles across its business practices and overall performance. Last year, NanoMalaysia received the Integrity, Governance, and Anti-Corruption Award (AIGA) 2022 award in achieving the bronze award category for the workplace's work culture and practice of integrity. Recently, NanoMalaysia won The Star's ESG Positive Impact Gold Award under the Innovative Partnership category to recognise NanoMalaysia's efforts in collaborating with industries through its Venture Build Model.

Launched by the United Nations in 2015, the SDGs are a set of 17 global serve as a worldwide call to action for governments, businesses, and civil society to collaborate and eliminate poverty while ensuring a life of dignity and equal opportunities for everyone, all while staying within the limits of our planet's resources. By addressing global challenges ranging from climate, water and food crises to poverty, inequality and conflict, companies are encouraged to advance sustainable development through their investments, the solutions they develop and the business practices they adopt.
