KOTA DAMANSARA, Selangor , April 15 (Bernama) -- The Old Frees Association, comprised of alumni from Penang Free School students in Singapore, has collected donations for the family of Tan Sri P. Ramlee. Apart from the alumni several prominent personalities such as the Honorable George Yeo, former foreign minister of Singapore and prominent architect and scholar Professor Tay Kheng Soon, have also contributed to the donation. Recognising the contribution of the legendry Tan Sri P. Ramlee, a singer, actor, composer and director, who was also an alumnus from Penang Free School, the Old Frees Association based in Singapore has decided to initiate this donation as a token of appreciation for Tan Sri P. Ramlee’s descendants.

This donation was entrusted to Yusmadi Yusoff, former senator and member of Parliament of Balik Pulau, and currently Chairman of Encorp Berhad (ENCORP). Pursuant to that, ENCORP who believes in the role of culture in development and promoting understanding amongst people in this country and the region, also contributed RM2,000, making the donation total RM4,100.

ENCORP’s Chairman, Yusmadi Yusoff said “We believe an effort such as this among private citizens and corporations, should be encouraged further to the highest level of leadership between the two countries, Malaysia and Singapore considering the influence and impact of Tan Sri P. Ramlee.”

Yusmadi Yusoff added “It is our hope that issues such as Royalty of Tan Sri P. Ramlee’s work should be addressed not only from legal perspective but from social, cultural and humanity. For us, Tan Sri P. Ramlee’s work goes beyond commercial and traditional parameters. It has potential to be a catalyst in promoting cultural understanding among people of the two countries in particular ASEAN. It appears that Tan Sri P. Ramlee is a shared common ground to nurture bilateral and regional understanding among the two countries and ASEAN.”

The more meaningful efforts or initiatives such as this be detected at the highest level of the top leadership of both countries towards acknowledging and recognising the importance of P. Ramlee as an ASEAN icon of cultural diplomacy, which has promoted cultural and mutual understanding between the two countries and the region. Moreover, it is essential that due consideration is given to supporting the descendants of P. Ramlee, ensuring that their rightful inheritance from his legacy is duly honored.”

The donation has been distributed to Sazali P. Ramlee, the son of the late great artist Tan Sri P. Ramlee.
