KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 (Bernama) -- The first batch of 160 "Xiale" watermelons from Xiaxian County, Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province, has been successfully exported to Malaysia, marking the county’s first foray into Southeast Asian markets.

Located along the ideal fruit-growing belt at 35 degrees north latitude, Xiaxian County boasts abundant sunlight, rich soil, and significant temperature differences between day and night, conditions that are ideal for fruit production, according to a statement.

The watermelons grown in the county are known for their crisp, sweet, and melt-in-the-mouth texture, as the Xiaxian County also has a long history of watermelon cultivation, and historical records show that the watermelons were once a tribute to imperial courts.

Recent years have seen Xiaxian County focused on technological innovation and standardised production of watermelons. Each watermelon now comes with a unique identification code, growth record card, and traceable system to ensure consistent quality.

These efforts have earned Xiaxian watermelons several honorary titles, including Geographical Indication Agricultural Products recognised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the National Famous, Special, Excellent and New Agricultural Products.

According to data from the Xiaxian County government, in recent years, the annual output of high-quality watermelons in the county has reached 400,000 tonnes, with over 1,000 local farming households generating a total output value of 710 million Chinese yuan. (100 Chinese yuan = RM58.98)

Looking ahead, Xiaxian County government has revealed plans to expand exports to South Korea and other international markets, further boosting the global profile of the county’s prized watermelons.
