KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 6 (Bernama) -- A large-scale live historical drama titled the ice-fire "The Song of Everlasting Sorrow", made its debut at the foot of Lishan Mountain in northwest China's Xi'an City on Dec 1.

This unique performance, set against the stunning backdrop of mountains and water, was produced by the Huaqing Palace scenic spot and blends elements of ice, snow, flames, light, shadow, and music, according to a statement.

Originally launched in 2021, this upgraded version of the classic production incorporates innovative stage design, choreography, and advanced technology, offering a fresh interpretation of the performance.

The performance has transformed the winter season, typically a slow period for tourism in Xi'an, into a major attraction, marking a significant breakthrough for outdoor live performances in northern China during the colder months.

Based on the narrative poem by Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi, the dance drama revolves around the love story of Emperor Tang Xuanzong (618-907) and his consort Yang Guifei, recreating the moving chapters of the poem.

The 70-minute show showcases the splendour of the Tang Dynasty, a prosperous era in Chinese history that exerted a profound cultural influence across Asia and Europe through the Silk Road. Combining historical narratives, stage performances, and audio-visual effects, the drama brings the Tang Dynasty's cultural richness to life.

The Huaqing Palace scenic spot, known for its display of Tang culture, has increasingly integrated culture and tourism, producing notable performances that contribute to its status as a flagship tourism destination in Shaanxi Province.

Since its debut in 2006, the production has been staged over 5,300 times, drawing approximately 10 million visitors. It continues to evolve, constantly innovating to stay relevant.

This year, Central Asian actors have been introduced to the cast, aligning the performance with the multicultural spirit of the Tang Dynasty and enhancing its international appeal.
