KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 -- A truck driver was on cloud nine when China’s independent truck brand, FAW Jiefang, rewarded him with a brand-new vehicle for risking life and limb to drive away his blazing truck to avoid an imminent explosion which could have endangered the public last month.
This followed Sun Gang’s narrow escape from the jaws of death when he sped for kilometres in an extended truck engulfed in flames and on the verge of explosion after emerging from near a gas station.
Chinese media reported the fiery incident which occurred on July 14 across a street in Xinmin City Liaoning, according to a statement.
Sun Gang said the blaze was caused by welding repair errors, compounded by scorching weather which resulted in the fire getting out of control.
Sensing the imminent explosion, he risked his life, enduring the raging fire and heatwave and drove the burning vehicle away from the town.
The incident was posted on social network by Chinese netizens, garnering attention, with overall online readings exceeding 100 million, and resulting in Sun Gang praised as a ‘contemporary hero’.
However, this hero faced a crisis after the incident as the truck which exploded eventually, was the most expensive property owned by his family.
Days later, Sun Gang received a phone call from the truck manufacturer and received the good news that he would receive a special gift - the latest 550 horsepower FAW tractor J7.
The ignition key of the new vehicle was delivered by FAW General Manager Assistant, FAW Jiefang Chairman and Party Committee Secretary Hu Hanjie.
It is reported that FAW Jiefang boasts seven million users, and ranks no. 1 in terms of the world’s sales volume for medium and heavy-duty truck brands in 2018 and 2019.
